Air Canada adding codeshares on Scoot Airlines

Speaking of Aeroplan, is it possible we'll Singapore Airlines subsidiary Scoot Airlines become the next Aeroplan partner? Aeroroutes has posted details that Air Canada will start to codeshare on select Scoot flights out of Singapore in January 2025. There are lots of codeshare partnerships that do not evolve into frequent flyer partnership but seeing that Scoot is part of a Singpore Airlines, maybe, just maybe Scoot will become the next Aeroplan airline partner.

Even if you can only put 50% of your eats and drinks spending on this card, you will be ahead then rather just putting 100% on another card

If you are researching this card on multiple sites and reading other reviews you'll see a lot of hype on this card's 5x points earning. And in the words of one of my favourites, Public Enemy. "Don't believe the hype!"

Want to earn more points so you can travel sooner? Get more cash back to add to your savings? Make the most of your loyalty programs? Rewards Canada has helped milliions of Canadians since 2001.

Coincidence? Here's Rewards Canada on Tuesday "The card comes with an OK insurance benefits package .... Noticeably missing are flight delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel/motel burglary insurance." and another blog on Friday "The insurance coverage on the card is OK .... Noticeably absent from the insurance inclusions is flight delay insurance, lost/stolen baggage insurance, and hotel/motel burglary insurance"

All of us points and miles sites, credit card sites and even financial blogs will cover the same news when it comes out. And a lot of the articles we write will be quite similar but sometimes that similarity seems to go beyond an author's own take on the news and heavily mimic our articles.

For example here's an excerpt from my aticle this past Tuesday about the new Laurentian cards: "The card comes with an OK insurance benefits package .... Noticeably missing are flight delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel/motel burglary insurance."

and another blog a few days after mine: "The insurance coverage on the card is OK .... Noticeably absent from the insurance inclusions is flight delay insurance, lost/stolen baggage insurance, and hotel/motel burglary insurance"

I want to chalk it up to coincidence but to me the similarities read otherwise. What do you all think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Remember Rewards Canada is the #1 source for Canadians

All of us points and miles sites, credit card sites and even financial blogs will cover the same news when it comes out. And a lot of the articles we write will bear striking resemblance but sometimes that similarity seems to go beyond an author's own take on the news and heavily mimic our articles.

Example #1

For example here's an excerpt from my article this past Tuesday about the new Laurentian cards: "The card comes with an OK insurance benefits package .... Noticeably missing are flight delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel/motel burglary insurance."

and another blog a few days after our post: "The insurance coverage on the card is OK .... Noticeably absent from the insurance inclusions is flight delay insurance, lost/stolen baggage insurance, and hotel/motel burglary insurance"

Example #2

I think you can tell who this other website referenced to write their review of the Cobalt Card

Rewards Canada:
The American Express Cobalt Card charges $12.99 per month for having it which equates to an annual fee of $155.88. That fee works out to be slightly higher than the $120 to $150 a year we see on competing cards but it is so worth it. You should also know that additional cards come at no cost so there is a savings there in adding authorized users versus many of the competitors.

The Other site:
The annual fee for the American Express Cobalt® Card is $155.88 ($12.99 monthly fee). This is higher than the average annual fees of other cards, which range from $120-$150 per year. However, the higher price is worth it. Additional cards also come at no extra charge, saving you some cash when it comes to competitors when adding authorized users to your plan.

Rewards Canada:
From the above you'll see you only need 15,000 points for popular short haul round trip flights. Make that spending with 5x multipliers and you have that ticket for only $3,000. You will not achieve that with any other card in Canada. Even business class to Europe is an amazing deal, only $28,000 in spending at 5x points gets you that round trip flight to Europe. Compare this to nearly double that for most other cards in Canada that allow you to redeem for business class.

The other site:
If you focus your card spending on food and drink purchases worth 5x points, you can afford that ticket for $3,000 worth of charges. At the other end, a round-trip business class flight to Europe will cost you 140,000 points, or $28,000 worth of spending on the same 5x multiplier. Other cards in Canada that allow you to redeem for business class have that total set to double the amount American Express offers

Rewards Canada:

  • Consumers who buy a lot of food and drinks
  • Consumers who travel lots or takes transit on a regular basis
  • Consumers who want to make sure they are getting the highest possible return on select category spending
  • Consumers who want to earn the most possible Aeroplan Points, British Airways Avios and points and miles with other airline and hotel programs

The other site:
If you are eligible to apply for the Cobalt® Card, these are a few additional considerations to make before deciding if this card is the right match for you:

  • You frequently purchase food and drinks
  • You frequently travel or often use public transit
  • You want the highest possible return on select spending categories
  • You collect Aeroplan and/or British Airways Avios points

I want to chalk it up to coincidence but to me the similarities read otherwise. What do you all think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! And remember - Rewards

AIR MILES is another program that Canadians either love or hate and despite a several tumultuios years the program holds onto 5th spot in these rankings. The program stil counts itself as one of the largest in Canada so it cannot be ignored with millions of Canadians still holding onto and earning AIR MILES Reward Miles.

In our first go round of these rankings in 2014 we scored AIR MILES with 5 Stars for earning but have cut that back by half a star for these latest rankings due to the program losing most of its nationwide partners like Rona, Sobeys, Staples and so forth. Still with its credit card options (Click here to see all AIR MILES credit card offerings), online shopping portal and remaining in-store partners it is easy enough to earn reward miles.

For ease of redeeming, the program gained a star thanks to the program moving away from limited seats on select flights to offering a wider range of awards across more airlines. On top of this they added to ability to redeem for flights anywhere in the world (no longer requiring a Canadian departure point) as well as access to premium economy, business class and first class flights.

Flexibility is slightly lower for AIR MILES compared to other programs on the list and the key reason for that is the lack of a partial redmeption option for flights. With AIR MILES uou need to have the full amount miles published when booking flights where as the others allow for points+cash options so you don't have to wait to use up your points/miles.

Outside of some occasional outsized value flight rewards in the old AIR MILES flights rewards system, the program was always kind of average in terms of earning versus redeeming value. And with the recent changes to the flight program the per mile value for flight rewards decreased from 11 to 15 cents per mile to 9.5 to 10.5 cents per mile. That being said the expanded redemption options for flights, good value in miles for car rental, vacation package and hotel redemptions we kept AIR MILES Reward Miles at three out of five stars for overall value.

I also want you to take this additional knowledge with you if you are researching the BMO card. You will find websites that rank the BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard as the best cash back card in Canada and I would be careful with that as they are most likely doing so to earn commissions rather than actually provide you with details on what is the actual best card. We here at Rewards Canada earn commissions on the BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard but even so the card doesn't even make it into our Top 5 Cash Back Cards

* Cents Per Point and Cents Per Miles valuations are strictly to be used as a guiding benckmark to help compare the earn and burn ratios between loyalty program. The actual value when redeemed will vary by individual based on numerous factors including but not limited to time of booking, travel dates, class of travel, operating airline/hotel etc.

This is always a good way to explain it! The savings versus value analogy. The value remains the same no matter what (without getting too technical like the flight is $10K today and $9K tomorrow) but if you weren't going to buy it in the first place you haven't saved at all.
It's like if you won a fancy car in one of those home lotteries. You pay $250 for the ticket and win a $100,000 Range Rover. You didn't save $99,750 if you had no intention of ever buying a Range Rover but you did just receive $100,000 of value for the $250 you spent.

Cents per point loyalty lesson

However to be able to compare the core premise of these programs, which is earning and redeeming points, you require some sort of benchmark to do so. The adopted industry standard (given there is no governing body or actual standardization rules in place)  is to look at the associated value of each loyalty program's currency whether that is points, miles, Avios, dollars and so on. This is typically denoted as Cents Per Point (CPP), Cents Per Mile (CPM), Cents Per Avios (CPA) or in programs with dollars, such as WestJet, a straight percentage like 2% (which would be the equivalent of 2 cents per point so that you can compare)

Maybe save this below for another general article on point valuations.

Value is based on over 70% of current Aeroplan cardholders receive a value of $0.02/points or more when redeeming for a flight as of Feb 1, 2023. Redemption calculation is based on actual flight redemptions made by cardholders between the period of Nov 8, 2020 – Feb 1, 2023. Now you have to remember, cardholders receive preferred pricing with Aeroplan as well so that boosts that value up for cardholders but not for Aeroplan members who do not have a card. And 70% of cardholders? Aeroplan has somewhere in the region of 5 to 6 million members and I would guess that there are probably between 1.5 to 2 million cardholders across all the Aeroplan co-brand card options. And then you have to ask how many of those cardholders redeemed during that time period and your sample size for that 2 cents valuation keeps shrinking.

I signed up for the TD aeroplan rewards credit card thinking that Aeroplan points were worth 1.5-2 cents per point according to basic google searches and Air Canada's chart https://www.aircanada.com/content/dam/aircanada/loyalty-content/documents/flight-rewards-chart-en.pdf. I've had my aeroplan credit card since March and have accumulated 52,000 points. I decided I would use my points to book some flights for 2 adults from Calgary to Toronto. At $0.015/ point I assumed I had ~$780 worth in points.
I started to book with points and noticed it was 42,000 points + $749.10 for two people from Calgary to Toronto. The same flights without points were worth  $986.82.  So essentially 42,000 aeroplan points are worth $237.72 or 1 point = $0.00566. At this point I'm asking myself why I switched from my cash back card to Aeroplan points.

This issue arises after sites publish what an Aeroplan point is worth. We are one of those sites - we put a minimum valuation of 1.5 cents for Aeroplan points which is a much more conservative valuation than others.

This is something I have also heard on occasion from our readers and am also suspecting tends to be the issue on forums where people are speaking up that they are having a hard time finding

If you don’t have the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard your best option is to convert American Express Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue Miles. The transfers are typically near-instant but American Express does state they can take up to 3 days.

Membership Rewards points transfer at a 1 to 0.75 ratio to Flying Blue. Which means you’ll need to transfer as little as 40,000 points for a round trip economy class flight or 100,000 points for one way business class. To put this in perspective, Amex’s own Fixed Points for travel requires 60,000 points for economy class or 140,000 for business class and a lot more cash for the taxes and fees for a round trip economy class ticket. And with Aeroplan you are looking at 60,000 to 70,000 points for economy class (60,000 to 70,000 Membership Rewards points) or 120,000 - 140,000 or more points for business class. As well with Aeroplan the fees for economy class will be comparable as Aeroplan does not include your first checked bag.

Even with the 1 to 0.75 ratio this represents an absolutely amazing redemption option for your Membership Rewards points. This is especially true for the American Express Cobalt Card if you earned most or all of your points at the 5x level. If you are able to redeem for a round trip economy class flight for 40,000 Membership Rewards points it represents a very low $8,000 in 5x points spending. For business class you are looking at 100,000 Membership Rewards points for a round trip or as little as $20,000 in spending. There is no way you can even come close to getting redemptions like this for that little amount spending with any other credit card in Canada.

Just read an article on another site ranking the BMO Cashback World Elite as the best cash back card. Not one mention of the low spending caps on the card. The rest of the article is pretty fraught with more bad info like ranking Koho Extra as the best travel cash back card!?!

For 23 years I have provided original, unbiased content on Rewards Canada and the dividends it pays shows. We have a great community of readers, great partnerships with airlines, hotels, card issuers etc, and Rewards Canada is the preferred go to loyalty and credit card resource for the Canadian media.

One such example is the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card which receives numerous awards from Canadian websites and blogs but who does Scotia highlight above the fold? Rewards Canada.

Rewards Canada is where you'll find no copying, no mimicking, no ranking cards or programs based on commissions earned or adveritsing dollars. If a card, program or promotion is great - I'll tell you. If a card, program or promotion sucks - I'll tell you. No fluff to try to sell you on them. There's a solid reason why we sell very few BMO credit cards....

That's the Rewards Canada difference and here's looking the next 23 years (hopefully!)

I, for one am not a huge fan of inflating earn rates (even if the value remains the same) as it can lead to misconceptions that the loyalty program. We see this with BMO Rewards credit cards and the recent changes to ATB credit cards. They have inflated earn rates that make them appear better than they really are. And as you mentioned on top of this for your existing program it affects the ease of calculation and you're messing with that familiarity that members have. I do understand where you are coming from though in terms of those non-transactional rewards
