By Credit Card Company Canada's Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards for 2016 - FACTORS

Go back to the Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards for 2016 Posted January 20, 2016

Here we look at the factors taken into account and some of the reasons why some rankings changed from last year

Factors
We look at various factors including cost of ownership, rate of return, the associated loyalty program (co-brand), ease of redemption, card acceptance, partnerships, issuing bank and benefits. Coupled with nearly 15 years of research, answers to hundreds of email questions from readers plus the charts and articles that we have written provides us the insight into the pros and cons of each card.

New Cards added to the Rewards Canada rankings
BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard

Reasons for the ranking changes from 2015

Travel Points Credit Cards (with Annual Fee)
For the second year in a row this is the category that had the major newsworthy change!

Travel Points Credit Card (with no annual fee)

There were no changes in this category from 2015!

Hybrid Travel Rewards Credit Card (with annual fee)
No changes in this category from 2015!

Airline Credit Card
The main changes in the category had to do with the loss of the Delta SkyMiles credit cards in Canada. With them leaving it naturally allowed the Alaska Airlines Mastercard to move up to fourth and allow the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite card to re-enter the rankings. This year was a really close call between first (TD Aeroplan Visa Infiniite) and second (WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard) as the latter has some amazing new benefits coming to it later this year. Despite these amazing new offers coming to the card we couldn't give the WestJet card first place because it still won't get you to places in the world that Aeroplan can nor can it get you into business or first class on those flights around the globe.

Hotel Credit Card
This category saw some slight changes as the IHG® Rewards Club Mastercards® from Capital One® were discontinued. Seeing that the Choice Privileges Mastercard left us the year before it only left this category with three cards. First and second didn't change while third went to the mbna Best Western Rewards Mastercard due to it moving up after the loss of the other cards. Next year should see more changes as we should know the fate of the Starwood Preferred Guest program!
